Residents of Somerville have been advocating for over a decade to have the intersection of Frankston-Flinders Road, Eramosa Road, and Grant Road, upgraded to address the complicated and difficult to navigate double roundabout.
The intersection takes traffic from four separate roads which are used heavily during peak times by motorists travelling to and from the local primary school, local businesses, supermarket, and industrial estate. Frankston-Flinders Road is the main arterial road through the township and is used by local industry including BlueScope Steel, whose trucks navigate the intersection en-route to their manufacturing facility in nearby Hastings.
The intersection is further complicated by the Stony Point rail line, which forms part of the intersection, and the large pedestrian crossing, which traverses three lanes of traffic.
Residents have long called for the intersection to be redesigned, citing congestion issues from the exponential population growth, and the confusing and often unsafe nature of its current design. Entering the intersection from Grant Road is of particular concern as traffic can enter from three different directions.
The Victorian State Government have committed $930,000 to upgrade the pedestrian crossings at this intersection, but I believe more needs to be done to address the traffic issues.
